'A humid summer night, I went down to a lake for a swim. Lying in the cool water I became aware of the sounds of nature; the commotion and pandemonium going on all around me; the flawless sky up above me. Endless. A distant thunderstorm freshened the air and silenced the grasshoppers. Illuminating the sky and the forest with a periodic flash of blue. I was on the edge; I could feel the energy rolling past… It was then I noticed the long white faces observing me.' Midnight Swim was based on an experience I had several years ago, and the idea has been fermenting for some time. Upon receiving capital from a commission, I bought a large canvas to launch into. It was an ambitious project for me as it was something I have never tried before: Painting from memory and feeling rather than a tangible source image. The immersive scale and compositional elements invite the viewer in. The reflective expanse of water in the foreground mirrors the night sky and becomes space for the viewer to enter. The geometric intervention of the fence grounds the composition and creates a barrier between the viewer and the subject. This barrier provides a contrasting rhythm of marks; thick aggressive and painterly against the flatness of the water. The mules themselves are ambiguous, half remembered and silent; glowing in the darkness, gazing directly at the viewer. **This Painting is Artist quality Oils and 10oz cotton duck canvas, stretched with traditional glue size over a hand made pine stretcher bar. Finished with a traditional hand made Damar Varnish
