Keratin Complex - Sentience Painting

Part of my Keratin Complex series investigating the deep rooted, but incredibly sad and pointless problem of poaching faced by species deemed through the inheritance of cultural beliefs to possess healing qualities. Rhino horn, made mainly from Keratin, is nothing but protein, similar to our own hair and fingernails and has been proven to have no medical benefit to humans. Yet rhino horn can fetch literally thousands on the black market, experts now say this is driven not just by traditional beliefs, but also by an elite and demanding 'art and antiquities' sector where possession of carved rhino horn and the like is seen as a status symbol. I wanted this painting to be a symbol of how vulnerable this species is, but at the same time how beautiful and unique Rhinos are.
