About The Artwork

The figure's curly hair flows into the intricate branches of the bougainvillea. The surrounding fauna envelopes and supports the figure, casting soft shadows across her face. Camouflaged into the branches are two quetzales on each side of the figure, facing her. Quetzales, the national bird of Guatemala, cannot be caged due to their ability to commit suicide due to sadness brought on by detainment. This is the ultimate testament of the significance of the capability to move freely holds. With a repetition of fauna, the image on the shirt depicts the map of Guatemala filled with flowers softening the borders. There is a power struggle with the bottom of the canvas, texture and detail heavy while holding the weight of the vast sky overhead. The diptych is a nod to how people’s status can affect their interaction with borders.
