in 1910 Hilda Hewlitt and business partner Gustav Blondeau open the UK's first flying school at Brooklands motor racing circuit in Surrey. The following year Hilda became the first woman in the United Kingdom to gain a pilots license. She regularly participated in airshows and with Blondeau started an aircraft manufacturing business, Hewlett & Blondeau Limited. Hilda was driven by her stated "urge to escape from the three Cs, crowds, convention, and civilization". She emigrated to New Zealand in 1926 where she lived for the rest of her life.
