About The Artwork

In this coastal painting my aim is to evoke the feeling of light on the ocean and the space of the infinite horizon. ‘EARLY MORNING LOW TIDE’ is a seascape describing the gentle colours of a passing storm out to sea on an early morning walk at Queenscliff in Manly NSW Australia. I wanted to paint the reflections of water along the sandy shore line, the inspiring energy of ocean waves and the reflection of light across the waves. I walk along the ocean’s edge and meditate on the beach most mornings. I love gentle stormy skies out to sea and am inspired by the light through clouds and the rain on the horizon, the power of the ocean - the ebb & flow, and its fluidity and tension. I use a multi layering of thin translucent washes and irridescent pigment mixed into the oil paint to refract light. The painting process is loose, intuitive and a response to memory and emotion. I like the strong horizon line with the reflection of light. While painting I am in a meditation space, and remember being near the water at the Ocean’s edge just after a summer storm.

I am a Sydney based artist with a deep affinity to the land and ocean. Every day before my studio practice I have a long early morning walk either on the beach or through bushland and national parks. I find calm and creative inspiration in wide open places or under the sea. My connection with the land becomes an inward journey, where memory and creative process reshape the external experience, allowing the paint, memory and inner vision to spontaneously create new colours, textures, shapes and lines in the “inner landscape” that then evolves. I have spent a lot of time scuba diving coral reefs with pelagics of the ocean, and travel extensively to experience and sketch in remote areas throughout Australia & overseas. I have many different series, I like mixing it up, and experiment to find new styles that I enjoy painting. I would be bored otherwise and I like the challenge to create something unique and spontaneous. My paintings are a response to memory and the calming connected experience I have being on land. I have created mixed-media works on canvas and paper aiming for inspiring, bold and playful artworks. I hope you enjoy them!!
