Note: size of piece assembled is 40" X 21" X 8", but disassembles into three parts (display base, boat, and sail) and reassembles with slip fit so ships in a much smaller box. The stand is a 100+ y/o draftsman’s box, with antique textile spindles and arm rests from a pair of crutches. The hull is from an old toy, with an antique spatula as the centerboard and a vintage crinkle cutter as the rudder, with a bamboo skewer as the tiller. The mast and boom are made of parts of an old fishing rod, and the sail itself is from an old sailbag. The mast and sail are slip fit so they can be removed for travel or shipping. The anchor is a promotional bottle opener from Delta, the evil eyes are from Turkey, the ship’s bell is from Zanzibar, and the typewriter keys are over 100 years old. The captain is a vintage action figure, while the other cats are from Indonesia, Thailand, and Japan, as well as a pair of vintage Sylvester Pez dispensers.

David Joseph is an artist, physician, engineer and inventor who lives on Martha’s Vineyard and in Naples, Florida. As an artist, David’s primary media are found object art and photography. An avid international traveler, he has visited over 120 countries on all seven continents, all 50 states, and over 250 UNESCO world heritage sites, each destination an opportunity to photograph nature, wildlife, and portraits. Unable to travel during Covid, David saw the potential to create art from the mundanity around him. He began to create found object sculptures made of old or used common household items, toys, and sports equipment. Each whimsical, thought-provoking piece displays the balanced composition of a trained artist and the skilled construction of an engineer.
