French Gothic, say the touristic guide. It sounds good. The Orreaga (Roncesvalles) Collegiate is from the 12th century and was built under the guidance of Sancho VII the Strong, son of Sancho VI the Wise, both Kings of Navarra, to give lodging to pilgrims crossing Pyrenees from France, on the way to Santiago de Compostela. We took the habit to go there and spent a few days every summer, for several years now and we never tire of the peaceful and harmonic atmosphere we breathe in that magic environment. The nice Collegiate Hotel takes up a part of the north-building, and this summer the window of our room looked out at the large green courtyard, enclosed by the monumental block of the other great building, the one that is today the Collegiate Museum-Treasury. Since our first visit, on summer 2013th, it has seemed to me a sublimely pure building. The great roof in sheets of dark lead, over the smooth and ivory white walls, marked by the light and rhythmic sequence of the little white wood windows, enclosed by the beautiful frames of Terra Santa stone. Very pure, amazing and elegant. But what infuse a greater feeling of purity than the whiteness of snow and polar ice? As the famous Bing Crosby song of 1942 played: “I’m Dreaming for a White Christmas”.
