Living just outside Newcastle, UK - the Tyne bridge has become an iconic symbol of life here in the North-East of England. The building of the bridge began in 1925, finishing with a grand opening in 1928. There is the larger Sydney Harbour bridge, which was being built around the same time but opened in 1932, and also features the same parabolic arch design. The image of the bridge has been hugely popular with tourists and replicated many times. However I have not come across much original artwork which tells the story of it's construction - in particular how workers had to cross tight-ropes without any harnesses to piece it together from the outside in. All whilst normal life below continued. Incredibly only 1 person died during the 3-year project. The drawing itself is simple graphite pencils in varying weights and also a black paper cut-out to make the building silhouette. The original artwork has pencil smudges which are difficult to avoid when drawing! However the print-version of the artwork has been cleaned up to remove most of the smudges.

Inspired by mid-twentieth century monochrome photography and found objects, William seeks to create bold visual stories which hold a strong sense of ambiguous narrative and intrigue, ranging in theme from the socially historic to the surreal. William produces original paintings and drawings, as well as scaled-down high quality framed art prints of his work - all of which can be purchased directly from this website. As well as continuously producing original works, it is also possible to request a private commission. William also established Gateshead Open Studios in 2018 - the very first open studios event in the area. Following a similar model to Ouseburn’s Open Studios, this event differed slightly in that it also included historical & cultural venues - as Gateshead has a rich history of grand churches & Quaker houses well worth exploring. Despite the recent events of the COVID-19 pandemic and needing to cancel the 2020 event, the hope is to resume in 2021 if all goes well
